Hello everyone. If you read everything carefully, you’ll know much more about computer prices and performance than the average person.
So many people want fast computers YET they go to this specialist who mumbles about this and that.. and people end up paying a LOT of money without really knowing if their computer indeed working faster or not.
How would you like to know precisely how good your computer is?
What systems are considered very SLOW and what systems are top performers?
Now, this thread is NOT for gamers! This thread is for users: photographers, videographers and designers who will use eight Adobe products like Photoshop, Permier or Sound Booth. It’s for users who work with photos, audio, video and graphic.
There are 2 websites that will give you INSTANT answer to how fast computer is:
#1 www.tomshardware.com
The site gives “Benchmarks” score to ”Individual computers parts” In other words. if you would like to replace a hard drive or RAM or CPU (processor) and would like to compare your current computer part performance vs new one your thinking to get - this is the website. And YES all reports are FREE.
#2
http://browse.geekbench.ca/
This site will test your overall computer performance.
Average computer Benchmark and price per computer:
1,000 score computer $140 1 processor 2.8 Mhz
2,800 score computer $350 2 processor Duo 2.8 Mhz
4,500 score computer $800 4 processors Q6600 2.6 Mhz
6,500 score computer $1,100 4 processors Q9550 3.6 Mhz over clocked
8,000 score computer $1,400 4 processors i7 920 2.6 Mhz
9,500 Apple Mac Pro $2,400 8 processors 2.8 Mhz
12,000 score computer $2,200 4 processors 4.3 Mhz (over clocked)
12,500 score new Mac Pro $3,300 8 processors 2.26Mhz
17,500 New Mac Pro $6,500 8 processors 2.93 Mhz
* These prices would be guide for you. So many times I see Major sites sell computers with 6,500 score for $3,500. That’s way too much. Be carefull. Also please remember prices change all the time. So this graph is only good for 2-3 month. And I guess some people pay because they don’t know any better. Yes I know you can put an argument saying “YES but they use Quality computer parts”.
Answer to this challenge is:
A) Companies who carge a lot for this computers many times use “Good but not necessary best parts”
B) I have included price per computer with not “cheap” but also one of the best parts.
True story: My wife started to work on albums on computer with performance score of a 1,000. She told me I use to go put laundry come back and computer was still working on effect. (rendering). It was horrible.
Than one time Oksana tried to work on my computer and said “Andrey I love your computer it’s so fast”. So I gave her my computer and when I worked on her’s I realized it’s time to have 2 decent computers. So I put together Quad (back than it was at the top) and score was approx 4,500. Well believe it or not but because of newer RAM and lots of it and all new components effect took 45 seconds instead of 4 to 6 minutes. Now Oksana keeps telling me “what it’s perfect and she doesn’t want anything faster” But wait! You can get faster.
Did you know that INTEL in intruducing in late October 2009 6 processor CPU, and if you put 2 of them on board, you’ll have total of 12 processors running. (Currently Apple has 8 processors) Some esitate new Benchmark score will go from 17,500 to 30,000 to 40,000.
Practical side of score performance:
1,000 score effect took 6+ minutes
4,500 score effect took 45 seconds
12,300 score effect took 14 seconds
40,000 score effect will take 3-5 seconds.
There are couple of things that you should know about computer. It’s very easy to spend $8,000 on computer and have a performance of $2,000 computer.
Also my friend VAL who works with computers every day says that RAM that just came out and cost $350, in 4 month after release will cost $140. Most of the time there is a HUGE drop off within couple month after new technology comes in. Same applies with New Release movies and iPhone and etc. If you want “newest” you’ll pay 2.5x of the cost. New processor alone cost $1,200 but in 4 month about $300 to $400 dollars.
I remember I purchased computer for Oksana (Dell $850) in 3 years I sold in on Ebay Computer, 17″ Dell monitor, keyboard, mouse speakers and XP Software and Office 2003 for $185.
Now follow my point carefully! You can go thru this LIFE buying $3,000 computers all the time or you can buy computers when they are at $500 level. I know that some of you might completely disagree with me. But here is the example:
YEAR 2004 Apple G5 $6,000
YEAR 2009 Apple G5 between $500 and $800
